As parents age, it’s important to monitor their ability to live safely at home alone. Thirty percent of seniors fall each year and a third suffer injuries that prevent independent living. Here are some questions to consider.

  1. Would your loved one be unable to evacuate quickly orcall 911 in case of an emergency?
  2. Does your loved one have difficulty standing up from a sitting position without assistance?
  3. Is your loved one unable to correctly recite his/her name or address?
  4. Does your parent appear to be in pain or exhibit significant physical weakness?
  5. Is there a strong urine odor in the home?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, assume your loved one is unsafe to be home alone.
